The Flu, Hollywood and BYOD Security

By Arleen Urquhart, Product Marketing Manager, EVault

I was recently in Los Angeles to present at the Data Connectors Tech-Security 2013 Conference. Coming off a long bout with the flu, LA was a welcome break from cold, rainy San Francisco. Standing at the LAX arrival level, I was peeling off scarves, outer coats and wishing I had sunglasses as I soaked up as much of the megastar-inducing rays as the fast moving taxi line allowed.

Fast forward to the conference:  I’m sitting in a session where a Black Hat security guru was presenting.   The long and short of it was how/why companies should employ security strategies to put employee devices in security bubbles that isolate them from the rest of the network whenever they come in contact with spurious content or are lost or stolen.  And this got me wondering…where had I picked up the flu?

Was it the self-service barista office coffee maker? (Background: my favorite is cappuccino.) Was it shaking hands with the new hire in Sales? (BTW: EVault is hiring like crazy.) Or was it just floating in the air?  (Being a Cloud company, at EVault we embrace the ‘open office layout’ in a BIG way!) Whatever the source, staffers have been looking pastier than Edward from the “Twilight” movie saga and dropping like flies.

So far in 2013 US businesses have been hit hard by the flu, and the season is far from over. It would be great if we could put staffers in physical bubbles, until they’re no longer contagious, or until we can trace the virus back to its’ Patient Zero origins (like in “Contagion”), sadly that’s totally unrealistic.

Directors Cut: Bubble that BYOD!
From the standpoint of protecting your BYODs (PC, laptops, and other smart devices) and ultimately your corporate data, EVault offers the next best thing. Should a user’s device be corrupted, lost or stolen the EVault Endpoint Protection software allows the IT admin to remotely wipe, brick, lock, or disable, in essence “isolate” that device in several ways:

Keep Those Cameras Rolling!
Equally important, the corporate data stored on those devices is securely protected and quickly available to users, so your business keeps moving.

  • File and Folder-level encryption – Data encrypts as it is stored on the device. Because data is encrypted on the individual hard drive, as well as on the server, physical data is not compromised should the device fall into the wrong hands.
  • Self-Service File and Folder restore – Your productivity won’t take a hit since a full, current backup copy can be recovered easily onto a new device, and users can safely access protected files from any browser.

Meanwhile, here’s my new strategy for keeping myself cold/flu free in the office. No more shaking hands, avoid those coughers and sneezers, and wear latex gloves when making selections at the barista coffee machine. Cappuccino anyone?
